So you wanna get published. See yourself in print, download your own book to your computer, read it on your Kindle, tell the world and let them read it too. Well, if you go with an e-book (electronically published and downloadable), the whole world can read it. And if you want to hold it in your hands, you need it in print, too. So the question remains, how do you get your creation . . .
From your pen to our printer and the World Wide Web!
It's easier than you think, but take time to think before you jump at the first opportunity to be a famous wordsmith. The internet abounds with deals, and "publishers" and far-away folks who will offer you all and provide very little. However you go, whatever you choose, stick with someone you know or can learn to know and have an up-close and personal relationship with. Publishing your book is huge. Work with someone who recognizes this and can do a lot of personal handholding. You're gonna need it - no matter what your publishing history (from none to many).
Do a little research, learn what kinds of book deals are out there - what to expect, what not to expext, and how to avoid the pitfalls.
Read About book publishers - print and e-books.
Book publishers represent less than a sixth of the publishers in the United States. Most books are published by a small number of very large book publishers, but thousands of smaller book publishers exist. Many small- and medium-sized book publishers specialize in a specific area. Through San Juan Publishing, we specialize in small press run publications featuring art, photography, local history, poetry, and special interest books. While print is still popular with many readers, today's E-book market is growing with "downladable books" that can go straight to a hand-held device such as a KIndle. Books can also be published in both print and e-book form - which requires totally different packaging, but results in the same title being made available to readers with varied reading preferances.
Whichever type of book you envision, printed or electronically published (downloaded from the internet), you must first have a packaged manuscript that includes cover, title page, content, and usually an index. The manuscript is then produced in whichever (or both) formats you desire: print and e-book. E-books sell for less, so the bad news is that you make less per copy; the good news is that you don't have to have a warehouse full of unsold books to worry about. Most publishers today and do either or both. Whichever way you go though, you must have a packaged product, and that's where the "publisher" comes in.
An internet search will show you lists of "publishers," "book packagers" and outsourced author or publishing services (such as editing, book design, covers), but in the final count, if you don't know them, it's hard to work with them. You need a reliable, proven, publishing resource, that afer reaching a contracutal agreement with, will help you every step of the way. You also need to know if your book will sell, or you should do a very small press run for you, friends, and family - a keepsake or memoir rather than a hoped-for blockbuster.
